Penelope Moodey offers an eclectic selection of impressionistic and abstract paintings. Using vibrant colors relating to her subject, Penelope extracts the element of “energy” from the figurative and natural world to provide a new perspective for the viewer. Her work is mainly in acrylic which provides a medium for spontaneous application and layering.
The importance of expression through painting has been a part of Penelope Moodey’s life since the 1960’s when she began work for a masters degree in Studio Art at Marywood University in Scranton, Pennsylvania. Having graduated from Brown University in 1958 with a BA in English Literature, she made the transition and received her MA in 1978 continuing studies throughout the years. The Cleveland Institute of Art and the Cincinnati Art Academy were important parts of that continuing study. After several years of work in silver and pottery, Penny returned to painting, choosing acrylic as the medium she prefers. The speedy drying and easy layering of that medium suit her spontaneous approach and imaginative subject matter. Moodey’s work is held privately and has been shown in solo exhibitions at the Suraci Gallery in Scranton, at the Miles Memorial Hospital in Damariscotta, Maine, at Bowdoin College, Brunswick, Maine in 2003, 2005 and 2008 and at the Pemaquid Watershed Association, Damariscotta, Maine. Her paintings have also been included in juried shows at the Harlow Gallery in Hallowell, Maine, the Boothbay Region Art Foundation, the Maine Art Gallery, Wiscasset, Maine and River Arts in Damariscotta, Maine, as well as in numerous Members’ Shows. Her work can be seen from May until October each year at the Stable Gallery, 26 Water Street, Damariscotta, Maine and Redfield Artisans Gallery, Northeast Harbor, Maine.
