Leon Anderson has been a plein air painter for over 30 years. His work can be seen in many public and private collections, including pieces at the Anchorage Museum of Art and History, the Museum at the University of Alaska, Fairbanks, and most recently, twelve large paintings at the headquarters of MaineHealth Partners, Inc. in Portland, Maine. A native of Alaska, Leon currently resides in the Portland area.
Leon’s work has expanded to include 3-dimensional pieces in wood and stained glass, as well as studio painting when the weather is less cooperative.
“For me, making art is a visual thing, not an intellectual process. I get engaged in what the work is saying and I respond to it. Whether a painting, a drawing, or a construction, it always starts with a gesture, and then the dialogue begins. Sometimes I have a result in mind, and other times I’m not sure where it’s going. Either way, I hold onto the feeling that generated the urge to create it.”
